Question
algoritms

DRBO (C)

I have a database of information that contains up to 50 fields and potentially over one million records. The records will increase substantially into the millions. The Database is in MS SQL 7 on a Quad Xeon 500Mhz/1mb cache Dell PowerEdge Server. The Server has 4 gig of memory. The OS is Server 2000.

One of the database fields contains whole emails that I have received. Each email corresponds to one record.

My questions are the following;

Can I use algorithms to improve the speed of my searches,if so, how much imporvement can I expect to realize? What factors, hardware or otherwise would enhance the performance of the algorithms?

Can I use algorithms to extract part numbers contained in the email field. The emails are not structured. The email content is randomly created by the individuals who send the emails. All emails will contain references to one or more part numbers. I am mainly interested in extracting the part numbers from these emails so that they can be entered into appropirate fields of the database.

In essance, I need to know what algorithms can or can not do for me.

Thanks in advance.
