Commented:There is a perscription that is formulated for dogs that you can get from your vet. But you would be surpized at how many of the medications they give pets are the same as they give humans.
Commented:It is a safe dose but not recommended on a daily basis long term. Some dogs will have an adverse reaction to valium (diazepam) and behavior changes are possible. Diazepam is used in animals as a sedative, anti-convulsant, and to treat certain behavior disorders, such as anxiety. It may also be used for its effect of relaxing both skeletal muscles (muscles used in movement) and smooth muscles (muscles of the digestive system and urinary bladder). Use with extreme caution in animals that have liver disease or are aggressive. In some dogs it may cause a paradoxical behavioral reaction...suppressing anxiety it may release inhibitions and some normally aggressive dogs will become extremely aggressive. Commented:I would scatter that 2.5 mg over the period of the day. That is a heavy dosage even for a 22 lb dog. .5 every 3 or 4 hours sounds more reasonable.
One of my former roommates had a beagle. She did little to housetrain it. When we were working during the day, the dog would howl all day. We lived in an apt building on the floor. Neighbors from all around were complaining. The landlord said it was the dog or us. She asked the vet about things, and he prescribed valium. Had to be careful. The dog was clever enough to pick it out of food. This is in the early 70's. However much got through, it did do the trick. The dog slept through the day, was lively when we were home. And then slept when we did at nite.
